Hello from Shropshire

Postby Pugwash » Sun Jul 04, 2010 9:58 am

Hello everyone,

In 2005 I retired from 30 years at sea and after a couple of years doing very little I now work (again) full time as the Design Technology Technician at the local secondary school. I was originally trained as a Handicraft Teacher way back in the 60's, but never did properly qualify, or teach, for that matter.

During my time at sea I kept my craft skills up and over the past few years have completed two Appalacian Dulcimers, a Hammered Dulcimer, a Cajon, a Bohdran, two Native American Flutes and a Mountain Banjo.

Last summer I set out to build a hurdy-hurdy using the MacCormack plans but what with singing, camping and other musical pastimes I was not able to find the time to fit it all in. However, several years ago I did purchase a set of plans from Pilgrims Projects in the U.S.A. for a simple three string hurdy-gurdy which is now well on the way to completion (I will post some photos when I can). At least I hope to have a playable instrument and can then set about building a more complicated lute backed version as I learn to play this one - well that's the idea anyway :)

I have no idea as to how to tune the instrument so I will be asking for quite a bit of guidance in that respect.

I have read many of the interesting topics on here alreday and I look forward to sharing some time and space with you all.

Kindest regards

Peter

Peter,

As the only other (as far as I know) gurdyist in Shropshire, if you discount Scott's Shrewsbury roots, if you need any help with setting up or tuning the instrument, please let me know, and hopefully I can point you in the right direction. There are a few invaluable tips that I have picked up along the way, which help get it right in perhaps a shorter time than if you just read the books, and I am more than willing to help.

Contact me off-forum.

Regards
Geoff
