The one we have for sale is No. 27 and was made by Mike for himself in 2007, then under pressure from an Essex client he let it go. We bought it on eBay when it was put up for sale by a friend of that client following his sad decease. After our purchase it was given the once over by Mike and is in excellent condition with new strings etc.
It has a standard six string layout plus five sympathetic strings (yes, five) and is currently tuned in Octave G/C using NRI gut strings. The Trompette string has one of Mike's excellent peg-style Capos for lifting the pitch from C to D, very useful when playing in G.
Construction is from Flamed Maple with Ebony veneer and Boxwood stringing. Mike carved the Head himself including the 'Sweetheart neckline' ! A Gilpin leather strap is included plus a soft Probag case.
Reluctantly we are letting this Gurdy go in order to fund a different project, asking for not less than £1400 plus carriage. Mike is aware that we are selling and we are sure will confirm the details as above if necessary. We live near King's Lynn in Norfolk UK.
Flatbacks by Mike Gilpin actually have a slightly curved back and are beautifully constructed.
