Postby halfies » Sun Mar 25, 2012 4:15 pm

Shown below is a draft of text and sample pics prepared for an attempted sale on eBay in the near future. Much of the earlier information originated from Geoff Turner (confirmed on the sale section of this Forum on Sept 30th 2010). We are hoping to achieve a price around £1450. Do please make contact of you are interested. We live near King's Lynn in Norfolk.

J. Grandchamp Guitarback Hurdy Gurdy.

This very appealing little 6 string Gurdy, substantially from mahogany throughout, was made, according to the label on the keybox lid, by Jacques Grandchamp in Toulouse, France and has an interesting history.

When new 19 years ago in 1993, it was purchased at a French festival by one of the Founder Members of the now non-existent Hurdy Gurdy Society and played extensively in the Derbyshire/Cheshire area of the UK until 2009 when it was sold by him to make way for a new more Baroque style instrument. Very sadly that gentleman is now deceased (and much missed by many of those that may be reading this).

At one point in it’s busy life this Gurdy was unfortunately dropped however, driving a tuning peg through the pegbox and splitting it, but it was beautifully and permanently repaired by a UK luthier and remains sound to this day. Since then the old friction pegs have been professionally substituted by the wonderful ‘Peghed’ geared tuning pegs, and all the ebony keys replaced as well, along with new bolted style tangents. More recently the bone material drone anchors have also been restored by a Gurdy luthier.

All these things, together with the inevitable marks of age and use, are illustrated in the accompanying photos eg hand-worn area and scratches on the keybox lid, an old but stable, slight crack in the top surface of the Wheel Cover, and various scratches on the back.

For all that it remains a very attractive instrument with a forward sound more appropriate perhaps to French dance and session work than to Baroque ensemble, and with a very willing Trompette. Currently it is set up in D/G tuning.

This nice little Guitarback instrument is reluctantly being offered for sale owing to the recent and successful purchase opportunity of a long coveted Hurdy Gurdy made locally, and sadly funds will not allow the Grandchamp to remain.

Many thanks for your interest.

Full ownership history:

Mal Denny, bought it from new. During its time with him, the tangents were replaced with screw tangents, and the crack and repair in the head were done. Also the slight crack in the wheel cover appeared during the 15 or so years that he owned it. It was in G/C during this time.

Geoff Turner. Bought it from Malcolm when he was buying a Henri III pattern from Neil Brook. During my ownership I replaced the friction pegs with PegHeds. Still in G/C.

Scott Marshall. I sold it to Scott to help pay for a Pajot purchase.

Rob and Marj'. They bought it from Scott, and since then have had the drone anchors replaced (I think by Mike Gilpin).

Just to say that the Grandchamp has now been sold to a lady in Sussex and that her mother plays a Boudet, so we guess that is indeed a good home.

Best wishes to all
