hurdy gurdy building

hi. can anyone advise me as what wood to use for the peg head on my lute backed gurdy,it seems to be maple, but considering the carving required i wonder, would lime be better.any thoughts would be welcome.

Bit of a late reply but I don't check this forum as often as I should. You will find lime too soft for the pegbox as such. A common compromise is to glue a block of lime to carve the head but leave the body as maple. Maple isn't as easy to carve as lime but if we wanted easy, we'd all be making ukeleles :-)

hi. thanks for the advice,where can i get a piece of maple large enough to make the peg head.it needs to be 3inx4inx6in. im having dificulty finding those sizes. any help appreciated.
