Making a symphonie

Postby WaterPig Master » Wed Sep 16, 2009 5:11 pm

Hi there

Been a while since I've posted... Well, anyway, after visiting Chris Allen and ordering a Symphonie, I thought I'd have a go at making one myself too. My grandfather recently made me a beautiful shaft, wheel, handle and bearings on his nice metal lathe - saving me a lot of trouble! I now 'just' need to collect all the wood, get it band sawed into manageable sections. For this first one I am making it simple, 1 melody, 1 drone, possibly a dog if I get round the others ok!

Had an idea that, though I won't do on this first one, may be worth pursuing. You could easily make a symphonie with diagonal sides - not like graeme mccormacks, like this:

. __
./ . \
/___ \

The dots are just so it looks right - PHPBB doesn't like multiple spaces!

It would solve 2 symphonie nags with one stone - more resonating area and shorter keys needed, therefore stronger. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Barnaby
