Basic tunes on a D/G

Postby halfies » Fri Sep 17, 2010 11:30 am

Last night we played our Gurdies to an 'audience' for the first time at a fortnightly 'Round-the Room' Folk Club near Sandringham in Norfolk (no, never seen any Royals present). We normally play Fiddle and Boxes there, within the mass of Guitar/Singers, and occasional Whistle, Flute, and Piano Accordion.

Instead of the normal quiet Club Night we had expected there was massive turnout with 30 performers in a room crowded with some 90 people, including many late Summer visitors.

Forget the planned introductory Gurdy Chat we decided, and just play the brief pieces we had rehearsed for the first and second half spots.

'Mine Host' gave us a handsome introduction, explaining about the necessary Gurdy tuning although Marj' still got a cheer when she adjusted the Trompette on the Wren.

Both spots went well, generating lots of interest as many people had never seen or heard a Gurdy before.

We played first a version of 'Calisun' which we first heard from John Hardy at GurdyFest 2010. We reset it adding a repeat of the 'B' part plus a simple harmony line throughout. For the second spot we played 'Bourree d'Aurore Sand' which we 'borrowed' from Neil Brook's really excellent D/G Tutor DVD. This is a great tune on Gurdy. We reset that as well (so there is no Trompette notation) then added another great Bourree, 'La Forge'.

All of these are attached as pdf files which hopefully will download OK if anyone is interested. The idea was to use simple pieces which were within our still very limited capabilities.

Now we are lucky enough to have a Gurdy each perhaps we should call ourselves 'Whollies' rather than 'Halfies' !!

Best Wishes to all

Rob and Marj'
............. hmmmm and after all that we find that pdf file extensions are not allowed on here so a waste of time really. How do we get past that ? Can anyone help please ?
